This article is based on one of our team’s personal experiences when visiting Lovina.
When people talk about Bali, the conversation usually revolves around Canggu, Uluwatu, or Ubud. But there’s so much more to explore beyond these popular spots like the north Bali.
North Bali is quieter, more authentic, and feels like what Bali was a decade ago. Head about three hours north from Canggu, and you’ll find yourself in Lovina surrounded by lush nature, peaceful villages, and a slower pace of life.
This guide will take you through the best attractions around Lovina. So you can experience the island’s true and timeless beauty.

Overview: A Quieter Escape in Lovina, North Bali
Lovina has already been more on the radar for tourists, but is still a great escape from the busy lifestyle in South Bali. It’s a laid-back coastal town known for its black sand beaches, calm waters, and friendly locals.
The atmosphere here feels slower and more authentic, perfect for travellers looking to unwind and experience a different side of the island. So, what is there to do in Lovina?

1. Swim with Dolphins in Lovina: A Magical Experience

The area around Lovina offers a range of things to do, but its most famous activity is undoubtedly watching or even swimming with dolphins. It’s a truly magical experience that we’ve personally had.
We chose the sunriset boat tour, which departs around 6 AM. As you cross the calm sea with the glowing sunset behind you, the boat takes you to the area where dolphins are most often seen.
Being so close to these incredible animals was unforgettable. They even offer the chance to swim alongside them! Just thinking back on it still gives me goosebumps.

After seeing the dolphins, there is also the possibility of going snorkelling. Which was really cool; there were a lot of fish swimming around, and the water was really clear. Unfortunately, you can see that the coral reef has been damaged.
If you’re planning to visit, we’d recommend going for a later tour rather than sunset. The sunrise trip is beautiful, but it tends to attract more tourists and fewer dolphins. Later tours are quieter, allowing you to enjoy a calmer, more intimate experience with nature.
In addition, the best time to see dolphins in Lovina is during the dry season (April to October) when the sea is calmer.
2. Peace and Serenity at Bali’s Largest Buddhist Monastery

Another must-visit is the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Monastery, which is called the largest Buddhist temple in Bali. It is only an 18-minute scooter ride from Lovina.
It’s a peaceful and spiritual place surrounded by hills and greenery. The temple features beautiful golden Buddha statues, intricate carvings, and quiet gardens perfect for reflection or simply enjoying the calm atmosphere.
We went early in the morning, and there were only a few other visitors, maybe three people in total. The tranquility made it such a special experience.
Just make sure to dress respectfully when visiting; shoulders and knees should be covered. If you forget, don’t worry, sarongs are provided at the entrance, so you can borrow one before entering.

3. Relax and Rejuvenate at Banjar Hot Springs

Just a short trip from the Buddhist Monastery, you’ll find the Banjar Hot Springs — a serene spot tucked away in lush tropical gardens. The water here stays around 34°C, so it’s definitely not for cooling off, but perfect for a relaxing soak.
Locals believe the natural sulfuric water has healing properties that help with skin conditions, joint and muscle relaxation, and overall wellness. That’s why this place has become one of Bali’s popular wellness destinations.
The pools are surrounded by stone carvings and Balinese dragon motifs, creating a peaceful and traditional atmosphere.
While it wasn’t our personal favorite—mostly because we’re not big fans of the heat—we still loved the beautiful scenery and relaxing vibe. It’s definitely worth a quick stop, especially if you want to unwind after exploring Lovina.

4. Chase Adrenaline at Aling-Aling Waterfall

Another must-visit near Lovina is the Aling-Aling Waterfall, located about a 20–25 minute scooter ride from town.
When you arrive, you’ll pay a small entrance fee and be assigned a friendly local guide who will take you through the area. Be prepared for a lot of stairs, but trust me, the views along the way are absolutely worth it.
After reaching the first waterfall, your guide will take you to the next one, where the real fun begins. Here, you can jump into the water from different heights, starting at 5 meters. (To be honest, we were a bit scared at first, but with the guide’s encouragement, we took the leap — and the adrenaline rush was incredible!)
For those who are braver, there are also 10-meter and 15-meter jumps, though those are best for more confident jumpers.
They even have a natural waterslide that flows down the waterfall—such a unique and thrilling experience. We hesitated at first, but the guides were amazing and made sure everyone felt completely safe.
If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure and a serious boost of adrenaline, Aling-Aling Waterfall is the place to go.
5. Watching the Sunset in Lovina

After a full day of exploring, it’s time to unwind and enjoy one of Lovina’s most magical moments the sunset. Find a cozy beanbag on the beach, grab your favorite drink (a cold Bintang, of course), and watch the sky turn shades of orange and pink.
Around you, locals gather to chat, dogs play in the sand, and soft music drifts through the evening air. It’s the perfect time to slow down, breathe, and reflect on the incredible day you’ve just had in Lovina.
As the sun dips below the horizon, you can head out for a delicious dinner at one of the local warungs or beachside restaurant—and maybe finish the night with a bit of dancing at a nearby bar to make your day end in the most magical way.
